I Hate Myself for Loving You

It’s ironic that so many Republicans despise government and want it to be smaller — much smaller.  Long-time Republican activist Grover Norquist has said, “I don’t want to abolish government.  I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”

Okay, size matters.  And some of those who oppose intrusive government are probably sincere in their libertarian beliefs.  But most right-wingers believe in a much larger military and intelligence apparatus.  And many of those don’t have a problem with government intrusions into people’s personal lives, or to how much power the wealthy should amass, or to just how government can promote Christianity in this country.  They desperately want to be in a position to tell people how to live, and call it freedom.

You’d almost feel sorry for people who so want to lead an institution they so vehemently claim to despise.  Or at least want to call them anti-American.  But that’s their job.
